THE MAZE RUNNER TRILOGY

MazeRunner cover Maze Runner Series

Book 1: The Maze Runner

Plot

A boy wakes up inside a rusty elevator that was in the water for hours. When he arrives at the top, he is greeted by other unfamiliar boys in a grassy clearing called the Glade, which is surrounded by tall, stone walls. The boy is unable to remember anything about himself. Alby, the leader of the Glade, tells him that his condition is normal and that he should remember his name soon. He shows him the Glade and how it is run. The boy wonders what is beyond the opening in the wall adjacent to the Glade, but he is warned not to go through there, being that it is a maze. The boy meets Chuck, and the two become friends.
There is a party that night to welcome the newest arrival. Every month, a new person and supplies come in the elevator. Newt, second in command and gardener, explains that the Maze is the only way out. The most able boys become Runners, who are the only ones allowed into the Maze. They search for an escape route during the day, but return before nightfall, since the Maze entrance closes at dusk, and no one has ever survived a night in the Maze. The boy ends up in a fight with a boy named Gally, during which he suddenly remembers his name: Thomas.
While Thomas is gathering supplies in the woods, he is viciously attacked by Ben, a Runner, who has been stung by a Griever—deadly slug-like monsters with metal legs that lurk in the maze at night. The boys decide to "banish" Ben, forcing him into the Maze to die. Minho, a runner, and Alby attempt to retrace Ben's steps in the maze, but Alby is stung and rendered unconscious. Minho appears at dusk, dragging Alby towards, but is unable to reach the entrance in time. Seeing this, Thomas runs into the maze to try and help. All three boys survive the night, with Thomas successfully killing a Griever by tricking it into running into a closing wall, squashing the griever, and they return the next day with Alby to the astonishment of the other boys.
Gally, upset that the fragile peace between the boys and the Grievers may be in jeopardy, proposes punishing Thomas for entering the maze, though Newt overrules him and makes Thomas a Runner. Thomas accompanies Minho and a few others into the maze. They find the Griever's corpse and remove a beeping mechanical part, discovering that it is numbered to correspond to a certain section in the maze. The first ever girl arrives in the elevator, who apparently recognizes Thomas. A note indicates that she is the final person that will be sent. The girl, named Teresa, carries two syringes filled with a mysterious substance. The Gladers use one on Alby, and he gradually recovers from his sting and starts to regain his memories.
Minho and Thomas venture into the section of the maze on the Griever's part, discovering an escape route. They barely make it back after being forced to retreat, and inform the others. That night, a wave of Grievers pour in from the walls and attack the Gladers, killing a cured Alby, among many others. Thomas stabs himself in the leg with a severed sting and remembers that he and Teresa were part of the organization that created the maze, and that all of this was a test. Gally blames Thomas and Teresa for everything and attempts to execute them. The Gladers stop him, and most of them follow Thomas through the maze's escape route. They end up in a lab with the dead bodies of scientists strewn everywhere. A video recording of a woman plays, explaining that the planet has been destroyed by increased solar activity, followed by a pandemic. The youths in the Glade were all part of an experiment researching their apparent resistance to the pandemic. At the end of the recording, she shoots herself in the head as the lab is attacked. Gally then appears, delirious from being stung and seeking revenge on Thomas. He fires a gun at Thomas, but Minho stabs Gally with a spear. Chuck is killed by Gally's shot. Masked men rush in to take the group away to safety, with Gally watching before falling unconscious or died. The maze is revealed to be in a vast desert. The dead scientists appear alive, stating that the experiment has been a success, and the survivors are now entering Phase Two.

Book 2: The Scorch Trials

Plot

Thomas and the other Gladers have escaped the maze and are put into a dormitory. The next day, the Gladers are in another dormitory, and people called Cranks are moaning and screaming through the windows of the room. The Gladers leave the room, only to find dead bodies hanging from the ceiling, and later find that Teresa, the only girl in their group, has gone missing. Thomas tries to find her with his friends Minho and Newt; instead, they find a boy named Aris, who says that he was in another Maze before with all girls, referred to as Group B, and woke here. The Gladers discover they are all marked with tattoos and titles: Minho is "the Leader," Newt "the Glue," and Thomas "To Be Killed By Group B."
An alarm rings; and when it stops, food appears on a table, and the Gladers eat. A man in a white suit tells them that he represents a group called WICKED (World In Catastrophe, Killzone Experiment Department), and that Earth has been ravaged by solar flares, and by a deadly disease also called the Flare. He continues that if the Gladers survive his tests, they could assist in the creation of a cure for the disease with which they are all infected, if they can make it to a "safe haven" 100 miles north. Following his directions, the Gladers go through a teleportation device into a deep dark tunnel. Outside is a barren, dry, and hot wasteland. Having left the tunnel, they discover Teresa, who warns them against proceeding and acts as though she viciously hates Thomas; but continue none the less.
The next day, wind and thunder threaten the Gladers. Some are killed during the storm, but most take shelter, including Thomas, Minho, Newt, and eight others. There, they meet another group of people and work with their leader Jorge and his acquaintance Brenda, who are Cranks that have not succumbed to the progressive insanity of the disease. Thomas and Brenda are separated from the group and captured by another group of Cranks, then rescued by Minho and the Gladers, and then treated by WICKED, where Thomas overhears that being shot was not an acceptable mode of death, as it was not in "the patterns." Teresa contacts Thomas telepathically to tell him that she is sorry for what is coming, but that it is all an act. The girls of Group B captures Thomas, insisting on the necessity of killing him based on instructions from Teresa. Travelling further north, Thomas is heartbroken by Teresa's vicious treatment of him and her repeated statements that she can not wait to kill him. However, the girls of Group B agree collectively to spare Thomas as he does not at all match the image of a monster that Teresa had provided. Afterwards, Teresa separates from the group and beckons Thomas away, stating that her act is over.
Leading him into the woods, he is captured by her and Aris, and Thomas is led to an underground facility where Teresa and Aris describe that they have been plotting to kill him all along, since before entering the Scorch, and force him into a chamber after Thomas attempts to kill Aris. He inhales a gas and passes out, regaining a large portion of his memories through a dream, and later awakens. Teresa begs Thomas's forgiveness, based on instructions that if he did not feel totally betrayed, he would be killed by Wicked, but Thomas now bitterly hates her and Aris for his constant suffering. The two groups meet, and find a place in the desert marked as a safe haven. When they get there, a storm picks up again, and multiple robotic monsters come out of the ground and attack the groups. The groups fight back, and a WICKED space shuttle picks them up, where they are told that the experiments are done. However, once again Thomas awakens, this time in a padded cell, and is told telepathically by Teresa that he has been gone for a week.
In the epilogue, an email is featured, that WICKED will soon tell the Gladers whether or not they are immune to the Flare.

Book 3: The Death Cure

Plot

Thomas is held in solitary confinement, but is eventually released. He, along with some others, soon learns from Assistant Director Janson that the claim of a cure for the Flare (a deadly disease) was a lie. However, while many of the people present are immune, not all are, and many in the outside world despise the immune. The Gladers are offered the chance to restore their memories, and it is also revealed that the controlling device in their brains will be removed in the process. This means that Thomas, Teresa, and Aris will no longer be able to communicate telepathically. Most accept the procedure except Thomas, Minho, and Newt, who are later forced into the process but escape with the help of Brenda. It is revealed that Newt is not immune to the Flare.
After narrowly escaping an attack, the group flies to Denver, with Jorge as the pilot, in the hopes of meeting a former WICKED neurologist, Hans. In Denver, their comrade Gally tells them about an anti-WICKED organization, called the 'Right Arm'. They find Hans, and WICKED attempts to control Thomas to kill him, but Brenda and Minho stop him, and Hans frees Thomas from control. Later, Thomas discovers that Newt has been taken to a Crank sanctuary (housing those driven insane by the Flare), and Newt refuses to return. Thomas and his group are caught in a Crank riot but escape, and Thomas reads Newt's letter, in which Newt begs Thomas to euthanize him. Thomas and the others are captured by bounty hunters, but convince their kidnappers to take them to the headquarters of the Right Arm, where they meet Vince, the group's leader. Plans are made to infiltrate WICKED headquarters. Thomas has previously been invited back to participate in the third phase of the Trials, so he agrees to plant the device allowing the Right Arm into the building. While driving to the building, Thomas spots Newt who is still sane enough to recognize him and upon Newt's insistence shoots him in the head.
Thomas plants the device, but is told by Janson that he is the Final Candidate, whose brain shall be removed to collect the final data for a cure to the Flare. Thomas later discovers that Janson is suffering from the Flare and is eager for Thomas' operation to save himself. Just before the operation, Thomas, and hundreds of other immunes, are saved by Chancellor Ava Paige, WICKED's leader, who provides several maps for a series of escape routes.
Thomas, Minho, Teresa,Gally and Brenda go underground to the Mazes, where the new round of Immunes are being kept. They collect the people as the Right Arm detonates their explosives, causing the underground caverns to begin to collapse. as they reach the Flat Trans to escape, Janson and several others appear and attempt to capture Thomas, who strangles and kills Janson. However in the attempt to get away, Teresa is killed. When the flat trans reaches its destination in the remote wilderness, Brenda tells Thomas that although the cure could not be found, they have everyone else to repopulate the world, and they kiss. In the epilogue, Ava Paige laments that a cure for the Flare was never discovered, the Immunes will be able to restart civilization, and that the plague had been deliberately released to control the population.
